Want to send smaller photos?

image Your multi-mega-pixel digital camera certainly produces great photos, but when it come to sharing them, it is a pain to send and receive such large payload whether by email, Twitter, Facebook or IM.

Shrink Pic is a small utility running as background task can help you painlessly resize the photos before sending. All you need to do is install Shrink Pic. It automatically detects when you’re sending large photo files and compresses them in the background.

There’s no setup, no operating instructions, nothing, nada. Just send your photos normally and Shrink Pic takes care of shrinking them.

How it works

Shrink Pic runs in the background. It has a taskbar icon which tells you it’s waiting for photos to be sent.

image Then, when it detects that you’re sending a large photo, it automatically creates a temporary copy, resizes it and sends it instead. It gives you a notice message, so you’ll know the photo you sent was resized. Of course, the original photo doesn’t change, only the temporary copy.
You can control how Shrink Pic resizes your photos. Select between three automatic resize levels or enter your own custom sizes. Shrink Pic also recognizes rotated photos (portrait layout) and resizes them intelligently, so you don’t need to worry about that too.

Microsoft’s Revamping Windows Mobile?

image The most successful story in the consumer space for Microsoft has been the Xbox360 and its ecosystem and that where Microsoft seems to leverage to give a boost to its ailing Windows Mobile division. In the latest job posting, Microsoft is looking for a project leader with the below job description:

“We need a Principle Program Manager who can help drive the platform and bring Xbox LIVE enabled games to Windows Mobile. This person will focus specifically on what makes gaming experiences "LIVE Enabled" through aspects such as avatar integration, social interactions, and multi-screen experiences”…

As Windows phone adoption rate is rapidly eroded with the lack of innovation and responsiveness. Android, iPhone and Blackberry continue to dominate the mobile space, we should see Microsoft will put more focus in to its mobile development.

While the next version of Windows Mobile 7 is still at large, few Windows Mobile enthusiast sites noted new leaks related to a new version Windows Mobile 6.5.3, which might bridge the gap of older version to the version 7 with capacitive screen support.

We could hear more about the game plan of Microsoft, which hopefully will be unfold at the upcoming CES in Las Vegas.

Semacode Releases Free QR Reader for iPhone

As Google continues to build out its search technology that will go beyond browser-based text search, the company has gradually expanded beyond browser-based text search to include voice and image searches. The recent Google Goggles application available on Android-based only, allows user to snap or scan a picture from the phone camera for search arguments. Goggles is still a novelty, its search are still hit and miss results.

A more reliable way is by using QR code. Google put out 100,000 Favorite Places QR codes on businesses across the USA for your convenience.

imageSemacode is releasing for iPhone users its free app for QR code reader. Semacode app uses a simple email-based login to allow you to access your complete scanning history from our new PC-based web interface, and it’s synchronized automatically. Down link (iTunes)

imageQR codes are the commercial name for a type of 2D(dimensional) bar code – as opposed to 1 dimensional barcodes which have lines running in vertical strips running in a horizontal format from left to right.

QR Codes can be implemented to do the following;
  • Display Text Only – you might want to ‘push’ an address or some other form of information as text to the handset.
e.g. 40% off sale this Thursday to Sunday – our address is 255 George St.
  • Initiate Email Transaction – QR codes can not only initiate an email but pre-populate text into the email
    e.g.      Message: Dean@Cognation.net
Subject:   “Please add me to your mailing list“.
  • Initiate SMS transaction – QR codes are often used to initiate sms.
e.g. QR code on poster to sms Vote for “Danny” in this weeks American Idol
  • Initiate Browser Session – Most QR marketing codes initiate a browsing session for the phone to a particular website landing page (which allows for great analytics tracking of advertisements success – see landing page topic below).
  • Initiate Audio Stream – You can use a QR code to initiate the download an audio track.
e.g. Lets say your client is Sony Records – on the billboard posters/magazine advertisements you place a small QR code – this code could download a stream of 10 second audio track previews for the reader to listen to right then and there onto their handset.
  • Initiate Video Stream – Any phone that allows video to be displayed can use QR codes to initiate playing of a video stream.
e.g. “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull” movie poster campaign which had a QR code on the bottom right which allowed 3 minute Movie Trailer to be directly played on your mobile handset while in the cinema foyer. [Via Cognation.net]

WebAlbumsAssistant: Batch Download Picasa Web Albums

image After the Holidays, you will probably receive invitation from friends or family members to view their online photo albums, while you can download pictures as you select one by one, there has not been an easy way to download all the pictures from that album at once.

Fortunately I ran across this small utility called picasa-webalbums-assistant, the small Java utility allows to download public albums by UserID or by copying and pasting an invitation link (for private albums). Thumbnail previews allow you to download only the photo’s you want.

Note: If the invitation comes with a country code, example http://Picasaweb.geegle.fr/…. , just, replace .fr to .com

Download HERE!. You just need java 5.5 or later to run it.
