HTML5 là phiên bản tiếp theo của HTML4.1. Nó được phát triển thêm 1 số nhóm phần tử mới sẽ tối ưu hóa trang web của chúng ta hơn.

HTML 5 cũng sẽ bao gồm các hàm API mới nhằm hỗ trợ tốt hơn cho tính truyền thông bởi các thao tác vẽ đồ họa trên màn hình, lưu trữ dữ liệu ngoại tuyến, kéo và thả.

Ngoài ra, với HTML5, người dùng có thể mở một video trên nền web mà không cần tải về bất kỳ một plugin hỗ trợ  (Macromedia Flash, Quicktime, Windows Media,…), chỉ cần trình duyệt hỗ trợ nền tảng HTML5 là được. Vì vậy máy điện toán của bạn sẽ ít xử dụng CPU hơn.

Youtube, Vimeo đang tiến hành thử nghiệm nền tảng HTML5, với mục đích sẽ phá vỡ vị trí bá chủ của công nghệ Flash mà Adobe xây dựng từ trước đến nay dành cho nền tảng video trên nền web.

Như ông Steve Jobs đã thông báo, Apple sẽ tuyệt đối không dùng Flash trên iPhone, iPod Touch và iPad; Apple hy vọng HTML5 sẽ tràng ngập thị trường Web. Google củng sẽ dùng HTML5 trên Chrome OS. 

Thử nghiệm HTML5 trên trình duyệt Chrome của Google cho thấy chất lượng video HTML5 của Youtube là rất tốt, thậm chí nó còn nhanh hơn cả trên môi trường Flash dù vẫn đang là trong giai đoạn thử nghiệm.

HTML5 mới được phát triển gần đây, và còn được ít người sử dụng, tuy nhiên, hầu hết các trình duyệt lớn như: Firefox 3.5, Google Chrome 2.0, Safari 4.0, Opera 10, YouTube, Vimeo đều đã đón đầu công nghệ bằng cách hỗ trợ chúng.

When Google used it to design a new Google Voice web app, among others, it was framed as the murderer the of the OS-specific application When the iPad was announced with no Flash support, HTML5 was immediately pegged as a salve, not to mention a way to get around the "closed system" of Apple’s App Store.

HTML5 includes support for a simple tag that lets developers embed video in a page just like they’d embed a JPEG or other image, with a pointer to a file on a server. Packed along with the ability to read that video tag are a few rendering engines, which would decode the video without any kind of plugin. Embedding a video with HTML5 is as easy as embedding an image.

In addition, HTML5 promises the following features will be built-in to the standard : Offline storage; Drag-and drop elements; Location-based services …. All the ingredients for great Web-based apps.

The remaining question is how fast the adoption will take place. The Web has been built around HTML 4 for so long. Many ecosystems built around Flash technology are still popular (e.g. gaming sites). To make a swept change  would be much harder than 10 years ago when the Web was not as pervasive.
