Vodafone Offers Google Nexus One Online and Retail for $0 with Contract.
Until now, the Nexus One, Google ‘s first own-brand mobile phone has been only available online in the US. This might explain the slow sale figure of 135,000 units in the first 74 days compared to millions iPhones and Motorola Droid.
For its international launch starting in UK, Google has decided to make the device available in-store as well as online, starting this Friday 4/30.
A Google spokesperson said, "We have decided that the best and fastest way to get Nexus One into the hands of European consumers is through our partners. Consumers in Europe will be able to buy Nexus one from mobile operators, beginning with Vodafone."
Vodafone will carry the device at its store and offers 2 plans: free with £35 per month and £99 with £25 per month. Both are with two year contract. Vodafone will provide customer support, which has been sorely lacking in the US.
If the launch is a success, I speculate that Google might replicate its marketing tactic elsewhere, including the US, perhaps… No comments form Google so far.
