Apple Purchased Voice App Siri Positioning to compete with Android.

Siri, the virtual voice-enable assistant just got acquired by Apple, According to FTC filing .. Siri app  is aiming to provide a quick location-based search or to assist with everyday planning. Similar to modern mobile search apps, Siri uses a simple voice recognition for data input and the results are collapsible in text combining with maps, directions and direct phone calling capability.

As you know Google implements pretty much voice capability for data input on its Android 2.1. I’d consider this move from Apple to position itself to compete with its now rival. Apple might use Siri technology to embed voice API in its iPhone OS.

Microsoft Released Embedded Windows 7 for TV, Set-Top Boxes,…

image Windows Embedded Standard 7, previously known by the code name Quebec has been released to manufacturers (no public distribution available). This is the first attempt from Microsoft to bring its popular OS beyond the PC.

“With the release of Windows Embedded Standard 7, Microsoft has furthered its commitment to the integration of Windows 7 technologies in the specialised consumer and enterprise device markets,” Microsoft’s Kevin Dallas, general manager of the company’s Windows Embedded unit.

Windows Embedded Standard 7 includes Windows Media Centre, Windows Touch and power management APIs, and according to Dallas will allow Windows 7 to become the heartbeat of the digital media network in the home.

“The addition of the Windows Media Centre feature in Windows Embedded Standard 7 is driving the set-top box, connected media device and TV markets by providing OEMs with opportunities to develop uniquely branded experiences and service providers with capabilities to explore additional revenue streams with unique content through a centralized media hub in the home,” Dallas said. Dazzboard Browser-Based Utility to Sync Media to Smartphones (Windows & Mac Support)

Microsoft Announces Patent Agreement with HTC… on Android Platform

image HTC, a long time Windows Mobile OS phone maker, recently diversifies their portfolio with Android OS, has just been granted by Microsoft for a number of its patents for the Android  based devices.

The intriguing move would prevent HTC from similar law suite filed by Apple, but it also might preemptively shield HTC (as long standing Microsoft partner) from perhaps future lawsuits, should Microsoft goes against Google.

Microsoft Announces Patent Agreement With HTC

REDMOND, Wash. — April 27, 2010 — Microsoft Corp. and HTC Corp. have signed a patent agreement that provides broad coverage under Microsoft’s patent portfolio for HTC’s mobile phones running the Android mobile platform. Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft will receive royalties from HTC.

The agreement expands HTC’s long-standing business relationship with Microsoft.

“HTC and Microsoft have a long history of technical and commercial collaboration, and today’s agreement is an example of how industry leaders can reach commercial arrangements that address intellectual property,” said Horacio Gutierrez, corporate vice president and deputy general counsel of Intellectual Property and Licensing at Microsoft. “We are pleased to continue our collaboration with HTC.”

Android’s Boss Andy Robin Confirmed Flash Support on Android 2.2

Andy Rubin,  VP of Engineering at Google shared, in an interview with the NY Times that the next version of Android codenamed FroYo will provide full support for Adobe’s Flash 10.1 standard, meaning the browser in the Nexus One (possible release scheduled for May 19) will display and play the ubiquitous Flash video as well as Flash based games,…similar to the desktop experience.

A move that challenges directly with Apple mobile devices, which only support HTML 5 for video playback and completely ignore Flash-based Web sites.

Musings on Design and Development for Windows Phone 7 Apps

Clarity Consulting, a design firm specialized in developing concept for mobile application running on Windows Phone Classic, iPhone and Android, has just showed off few templates for the upcoming Windows phone 7. including the below media-rich Hulu app.


According to the company all the apps were built so the company could get a feel for the new tools and what’s supported in the Windows Phone framework. Their thoughts? “We’ve produced mobile applications, mostly in concept form, for Windows Phone Classic, iPhone and Android but never so quickly and not of such high quality and visual impression.” Seeing the designs produced by their team, they note that it has become clear to them “that this is not just another mobile application container.”

iPad USB Camera Kit Supports Audio Headsets and Keyboard

image Apple is offering its $29 iPad camera connection kit available fro pre-order. The kit consists of two little plastic dongles which connects into the iPad’s dock port. On has an SD card reader,  the other has a plain old USB port for plugging the camera in direct to transfer photos to the iPad.

Some early experimentation revealed the USB port actually supports other USB audio devices such USB headset and keyboard. The USB headset is particularly useful for using VoIP Skype app.  [Via TUAW Tidbits]

RIM to Launch Blackberry OS 6.0 Next Quarter

image RIM, the maker of the BlackBerry handsets, will release a its Blackberry OS 6.0 next quarter, Co-CEO Mike Lazaridis said today at a conference in Orlando, Florida

RIM seeks to position itself to compete with Apple iPhone, Google Android and the upcoming Microsoft Windows Phone 7.

The new OS will be “very familiar to anyone who’s used the BlackBerry,” he said. It will work on touch-screen devices like the Storm2 and traditional BlackBerry models with a keypad. Sorry for the trackball devices!
