As anticipated, RIM and AT&T held a press event Today in New York City to announce its new BlackBerry Torch 9800 smartphone, an AT&T handset with a multi-touch screen and slide-out keyboard as well as a new OS called Blackberry 6.0
Blackberry Torch (previously known as 9800) got its name from of Torch Mobile, the maker of the WebKit based HTML5 browser that RIM acquired in 2009.
The form factor of the new smartphone is similar to the touch screen Blackberry Storm with addition of a Palm-Pre style sliding QWERTY keyboard. The display resolution is 360×480; WiFi 802.11 N (downward compatible with B/G); 5MP camera with flash, 624MHz ARM CPU; 512MB RAM/ROM and 4GB of built-in storage with a microSD external slot. The device will go on sale on AT&T network starting August 12th for $199 with 2-year contract agreement.

The operating powers the Torch is the new OS that RIM calls simple Blackberry 6. the new version supports both touch and non-touch screen device. RIM will make this new OS available as an upgrade to its most recent smartphones.
The highlights of Blackberry 6 are the new UI, new universal search and a new browser that offers excellent support for HTML5. While the new OS supports legacy apps, RIM encourage developer to develop HTML5 based apps and market them in its app world. The Blackberry 6 also emphasizes on consumer space with enhancement of Media apps that let users sync media contents over WiFi. Social Networking integration is omnipresent.
Overall, the new announcement seems to play catch-up with the current crop of new phones. There were no standing out features that the competition has not already offered. Adding consumer-focused features along with more modern user interface could allow RIM staying in the game.
